Jerez de la Frontera

Jerez de la Frontera is a small city that has a number of similarities with Seville. It is located just a hundred odd kilo meters to the north of the city in Andalusia. The city is one of the major cities in Andalusia and has a number of unique charms that make it stand out. It is a stronghold of culture and is known for the flamenco, the sherry and the horses here.

The city has a total of nine sherry bodegas that are open for visitors. Jerez de la Frontera is also home to the Royal Andalusia Equestrian Art School that is known all over the world for its horses and shows. The two gypsy districts of Buleria and San Miguel are also worthy of note. These continue the traditions of Lola Flores, the legendary flamenco dancer that had his hometown here.

The Alcazar in the city is an impressive monument. This is surrounded by old walls. There are beautiful gardens, well preserved baths and a mosque. The Villavicencia Palace is situated close to the palace, which has its range of attractions. It has an obscure chamber that can be climbed into, and provides one of the best views of bthe entire city and the landscapes here.

The Palacio Atalaya is home to a clock museum known as the Museo de Rejoles, which is home to three hundred and two clocks that date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. These strike and start ringing all at the same time at noon. The pedestrian centers here are filled with many Baroque houses worthy of note, and are inclusive of many churches. The Cathedral has many Baroque styles used.

The Centro Andaluz de Flamenco is a museum as well as a flamenco school. It is possible to watch videos of previous flamenco stars.

Museo Taurino is a museum dedicated to bulls. Bulls and horses are common sights in the city.

Andalusia is rightly proud of its sherry. Just like Seville, the entrance of every bar in Jerex de la Frontera sports a barrel o sherry. The Jerez de la Frontera has nine bodegas, of which the Bodega Gonzalez Byass is the most famous. The bodega is situated close to Alcazar and has a construction by none other than Gustav Eiffel. There are also numerous sherry barrels autographed by famous personalities including the entire Spanish Royal Family, Winston Churchill, Orson Welles, General Franco, Steven Spielberg and more.
